Our 6-Layer Verification Process

Every review submitted to Gold Stars Reviews passes through all six of these checks before publication.

Step 1

Account History Analysis

Every reviewer account is analyzed for authenticity signals — account age, review history, device fingerprint, and behavioral patterns. New accounts with no history that post only extreme reviews are flagged for additional scrutiny.

Note: Accounts created solely to post a single review are held for 48-hour review before publication.
Step 2

Location Verification

For restaurant and in-person service reviews, we cross-reference the reviewer's stated location with available signals including IP geolocation and check-in data. Reviews claiming visits to locations far outside a reviewer's normal activity are flagged.

Note: Location checks are applied to dining, spa, hotel, and retail reviews.
Step 3

Purchase Confirmation

For product reviews and service reviews where a transaction occurred, reviewers can optionally connect a purchase receipt or booking confirmation. Verified-purchase reviews receive a "Verified" badge and are weighted more heavily in our trust scoring.

Note: Purchase verification is optional but increases a review's trust score significantly.
Step 4

Photo & Video Evidence

Reviews submitted with photos or videos of the actual experience receive additional trust weighting. Our system checks that uploaded media is original (not stock photography) and consistent with the claimed experience.

Note: Media is checked for metadata, reverse-image matches, and consistency with the review text.
Step 5

Timing & Pattern Analysis

We monitor for unusual patterns — sudden bursts of reviews for a single business, coordinated posting times, or clusters of reviews from the same IP range. These patterns can indicate review manipulation by businesses or competitors.

Note: Pattern analysis runs continuously and can retroactively flag reviews if manipulation is detected.
Step 6

Community Flagging

Our community of reviewers can flag reviews they believe are inauthentic. Flagged reviews are reviewed by our moderation team within 48 hours. Reviewers who flag in bad faith (to suppress legitimate negative reviews) face account consequences.

Note: All flagged reviews are reviewed by a human moderator, not just an algorithm.
